Responsible Gaming

Deciding your limits: before starting

The most useful decision about gambling happens before any money moves: fix an amount you are prepared to lose, and treat that amount as already spent the moment you commit to it. This turns gambling into a fixed-cost activity rather than an open-ended one, and it removes the temptation to keep adjusting the target once play is underway. Deciding in advance works because it is made calmly, away from the pull of a losing streak or the excitement of a win, and it holds up better than any decision made mid-session.

Chasing a loss — putting in more to try to win back what has gone — reverses that discipline and usually increases the loss rather than recovering it. The practical fix is to treat the original amount as the whole budget, stop when it is gone, and not treat a bad run as a reason to extend it. Money that is borrowed, or that is needed for bills or other commitments, should never form part of that budget, because a loss then reaches beyond the activity itself and into obligations that cannot be delayed.

Recognising the moment: practical signs

A short list of habits makes it easier to notice when gambling has stopped being entertainment and started costing more than intended:

  • Taking a break during a session, and after a session, rather than playing in one continuous stretch — a pause gives a chance to check whether the original budget still feels reasonable.
  • Involving someone else — a partner, friend or family member — as soon as gambling stops feeling entertaining, rather than waiting until it becomes a larger problem. An early conversation is easier than a late one.
  • Noticing the urge to chase a loss and treating that urge itself as the signal to stop, not as something to act on.
  • Keeping track of the amount actually spent against the amount decided in advance, rather than relying on memory or impression.

Where controls live: account and destination

Every page on this site, including this one, carries links to three independent organisations: gambleaware.nsw.gov.au, gamblinghelponline.org.au and responsiblegambling.vic.gov.au. These are the only outbound links on the site that are not commercial — they carry no sponsored marking, are set to nofollow, and open in a separate tab on each organisation's own website. Nothing is received here when a reader follows one of them; they are provided only as independent sources of help.

Controls such as deposit caps, loss caps, reality checks, cooling-off periods or self-exclusion belong to an account held with an operator. This site has no account, no form and no server-side application behind it, so nothing published here can switch such a control on, check whether one is active, or enforce one. Anyone who wants those controls needs to arrange them inside an account at the destination the operator link leads to, where the destination's own rules, checks and account settings apply. Age is not verified on this site and no gambling takes place on it; any check of that kind, like any account control, happens only after leaving this site. The eighteen-and-over restriction is stated throughout this build, including on the front page and at the end of every operator listing, and each of the ten operator listings closes with the same reminder: check availability and the current terms at the destination before claiming anything, since eligibility rules and terms apply there and can change without notice.
